We’re gearing up to enter the Canadian recreational market in early 2020 – and we couldn’t be more excited! JWC is putting down even deeper roots in the Kitchener-Waterloo community by planning to increase consumer access to cannabis through our new farm-gate store.
A farm-gate store feels like a natural extension of our heritage. Our company’s namesake, James E. Wagner (Grandpa Jim), had a strong country heart and an entrepreneurial spirit that inspired the JWC founding members to begin growing medical cannabis in 2007 under the Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) system. With Jim’s dedication, the family grew the farming operation from a small, 300-acre parcel of land to 3,000 acres.
“It’s important for us to give back to the community and support local growth,” says Laura Foster, Chief Compliance Officer of JWC. “We want to follow in his entrepreneurial footsteps. By striking a balance between tradition and technology, JWC has built a business representing generational values, offering products at the forefront of the industry.”
The proposed storefront will be Waterloo Region’s first retail shop located on a licensed cannabis cultivation site. The physical farm-gate store will offer direct sales of JWC cannabis and cannabis derivative products for legal-age recreational users.
The plans will involve furnishing an existing building attached to our flagship cultivation facility located at 530 Manitou Drive in Kitchener, Ontario.
The plans come on the heels of amendments to provincial legislation governing the cannabis retail market. On November 6, 2019, the provincial government released its 2019 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review announcing key updates regarding how it will open the market for cannabis retail. The revised legislation will permit licensed producers to establish retail stores on their production sites, increasing consumer access to legal retail stores.
“Amendments in legislation provide us with the opportunity to respond to consumer needs,” says Nathan Woodworth, President and CEO of JWC. “Essentially it will be a 2,000 square-foot retail store focusing on JWC products. We will proceed with licensing and building the store as soon as it is permitted.”
Being part of a community that fosters innovation and collaboration provides the perfect foundation for our business. Looking forward, we expect to create several new retail job opportunities to support the new farm-gate store.
